The braces are broken

Keep the defective parts and make an appointment with us as soon as possible.
The loose brace presses

It is important to distinguish whether the braces are pressing on the teeth or the gums. Pressure on the teeth is often the case in the first few days and is a desired effect, as it means that the braces are working and the teeth are moving.

If the braces are pressing on the gums and if this does not improve on its own after 1 day to 2 days, make an appointment with us as soon as possible to solve the problem.
The wire has slipped out of the anchorage
A rubber chain is torn
Individual rubber / individual wire has come loose
Protruding wire pricks or chafes a little
A bracket or metal ring has come loose
The palatal bar has loosened or slipped out of place

Sollte sich der gesicherte Gaumenbügel lockern, kann er häufig mit den Fingern zurück in die vorgesehene Halterung gesteckt werden. Wir sichern ihn dann erneut bei Ihrem bereits bestehenden Folgetermin. Ist der Gaumenbügel verbogen oder rutscht er wiederholt raus, vereinbaren Sie bitte zeitnah einen Termin.
There are problems with the palatal expansion (GNE)

If the palatal expansion appliance (GNE for short) has come loose, please arrange an SOS appointment in our practice immediately. During the treatment period with the GNE, the teeth and also the palate may be sensitive to pressure. This is due to the stretching of the upper jaw caused by the placement of the screw.

Pain or sore spots occur

Fixed braces consist of brackets and bands into which a wire is ligated. This wire causes the teeth to move. For this reason, there may be slight biting pain at first due to the tension. However, this reaction usually subsides after 2 to 3 days. In extreme emergencies, give your child a mild painkiller.

Due to the foreign bodies placed in the mouth, the mucous membranes of the lips and cheeks may initially react sensitively and pressure sores may occur. For protection, you will be given a special wax that can be used to temporarily cover the edges of the braces.

The gums are red and inflamed

There can be various reasons for gum irritation. The fixed braces can cause mechanical irritation. Please apply the wax provided to the relevant areas.

With removable appliances, an element of the brace may press on the gums or be bent. In this case, please make an appointment with us.

If the gum inflammation is due to inadequate dental care, your brushing behaviour must be improved. You can temporarily alleviate the inflammation with a disinfectant dental rinsing solution, but this solution should not be used for longer than a week without consulting us first.

Is supplementary dental insurance for orthodontics worthwhile?

Supplementary insurance

For children

Orthodontic services for children in KIG levels 3 to 5 are covered by health insurance

Additional services without sufficient medical value are generally not covered by the statutory health insurance funds

In this case, supplementary insurance for orthodontic treatment may be useful so that the costs are (partially) covered.

For adults

Orthodontic services for adults are always private services that must be paid for by the patient

Additional insurance can be worthwhile here to have costs covered

If you decide to take out supplementary insurance, you should definitely compare the benefits with each other
